I don’t think most folks envisioned him coming in and hitting the trail in the manner he has recently. Anytime you can get a coach with his experience in front of recruits and their families that’s massive selling point.

David Gabriel Georges Sets His Date

I discussed David Gabriel Georges last week, and how important he is to the staff. Coach Lock been forging this bond since he was at Oregon. We will know if it will be Ohio State or Tennessee soon enough. DGG has set his commitment date for July 22nd.

Jimmy Kalis Shows Out

This past weekend was the Under Armour Ohio regional showcase. Buckeye commit Jimmy Kalis was named the 2nd top performer by Rivals. Camps are very subjective, but any day that one of our recurits can shine is a good day at the office!

Smoke Around Recruits

Chad Simmons of ON3 recently logged a prediction for the Buckeyes to land yet another top 100 defensive lineman. This time it is for Edge Wyatt Smith from St Thomas Aquinas. Smith is the #78 prospect in the country, the #11 edge, and the #9 player in the state of Florida. Saint Thomas Aquinas has given OSU former first round draft picks Joey Bosa, Nick Bosa, and Damon Arnette.

Jeremy Birmingham states that the Buckeyes are making a push for Texas Tech commit Benny Easter. Easter is the #7 receiver, #8 player in Texas, and the # 36 player overall in the 247Sports Composite. This would be a huge get to pair with Jamier Brown.

New Offers

The Coaching staff extended two new offers this week, both on the offensive side of the ball.

Pennsylvania wide receiver Cade Cooper received an offer this week. Cooper is the #10 ranked player in the state of Pennsylvania and comes in at 6ft3 and 192 pounds. Notre Dame seems to be the favorite here. Ole Miss and Georgia are also contenders.

Illinois native and Northwestern commit, tight end Brady Johnson also received his offer this week. Tight end recruiting has been all over the place this cycle, so it seems Coach Bailey is turning over every stone this cycle. The 6’3 220 pound Johnson says he’s locked in with the Wildcats, but as we know recruiting is fluid.

Introduced in 2020 and inspired by Buckeye legend Bill Willis, the honor represents toughness, accountability, and leadership. It’s not tied to position or stat lines—it’s about who the program trusts to represent its identity every day.

Since its inception, it’s been worn by players like Jonathon Cooper, Thayer Munford, Kamryn Babb, Xavier Johnson, Cody Simon, and Sonny Styles—players whose paths were different, but whose presence inside the program was the same.

That’s the standard.

And heading into 2026, the question isn’t just who produces.

It’s who represents it.

Defensive End, Kenyatta Jackson Jr.

Jackson’s leadership profile is built on development and accountability within the structure of the defense. As a former highly rated recruit, the expectation early was tied to his physical traits. What’s emerged instead is a player who understands how to operate within the system—setting edges, maintaining leverage, and executing his assignment consistently.

That matters up front, where one breakdown can compromise the entire defense. Coaches consistently emphasize defensive linemen who “play within the defense” as tone-setters, and Jackson is trending in that direction. His leadership isn’t loud—it’s functional. Wide Receiver, Brandon Inniss

Inniss brings leadership (Returning Captain and Iron Buckeye) through competitiveness and physical accountability. Since arriving as a 5-star, his development hasn’t just been about playmaking—it’s been about embracing the full responsibility of the position.

That includes blocking, finishing plays, and competing in the run game—areas that define trust within a receiver room. Coaches consistently highlight players who handle the “dirty work” as tone-setters, and Inniss fits that profile. His leadership shows up in how he plays without the ball, which carries weight internally.

It’s visible. It’s repeatable. And it raises the standard for everyone in the room.

Offensive Guard, Luke Montgomery

Montgomery’s leadership is rooted in consistency, versatility, and presence within the offensive line. His development across multiple positions has built trust—something that matters in a room defined by communication and cohesion.

And I’ll be upfront—knowing Luke personally, there’s some bias. But there’s also perspective. The leader he’s developed into aligns directly with what the Block “O” represents. It’s not surface-level. It’s built through daily habits, accountability, and how he approaches the work.

Offensive line leadership isn’t loud—it’s steady. It shows up in preparation, communication, and how the group responds under pressure. Montgomery fits that mold. And that’s what earns respect inside the building.

Center, Carson Hinzman

Hinzman’s leadership is tied to experience and command of the offense. Playing center requires control—of protections, of fronts, and of communication pre-snap. It’s a position that demands trust, and that trust is built over time.

His path has included both growth and adversity, and that’s where credibility comes from. Players respect experience when it’s paired with development, and Hinzman has continued to build both. Coaches consistently emphasize the center as a leader within the offense, and his role reflects that.

His leadership shows up before the snap—getting the offense aligned, communicating clearly, and ensuring everyone is operating on the same page.

Dark Horse: Tight End, Bennett Christian

Christian’s case is built on growth—and that’s what makes him different.

Early in his career, he faced adversity with a suspension that could’ve easily knocked him off track. For a lot of players, that becomes a turning point in the wrong direction. For Christian, it became a reset point. He stayed in it, handled it the right way internally, and worked his way back into the program.

That matters in a building like Ohio State. Players notice who responds the right way when things don’t go as planned.

Since then, his development has been tied to embracing his role. The tight end position in this system isn’t built on touches—it’s built on trust. Blocking on the edge, handling physical assignments, and being reliable in key situations. Christian has leaned into that, and that’s where his value shows up.

Leadership in this context isn’t about being the loudest voice—it’s about consistency after adversity. It’s about sticking it out, doing the work, and earning your way back into trust within the program.

That’s why he fits as a dark horse.

Final Thoughts

The Block “O” has followed a clear pattern since its introduction—but it’s not about performance.

It’s about representation.

It shows up in different ways depending on the player:

• Defensive linemen who play within structure and set the tone

• Skill players who bring toughness and accountability to every rep

• Offensive linemen who lead through communication and consistency

• And players who earn trust through how they respond to adversity

Kenyatta Jackson Jr., Brandon Inniss, Luke Montgomery, and Carson Hinzman each bring a version of that standard—how they work, how they prepare, and how they carry themselves inside the program.

And then there’s Bennett Christian, whose path reinforces what this honor is really about. Growth, accountability, and response when things don’t go as planned—that’s part of representing the program the right way.

That’s the separator.

As the Buckeyes head into the summer, the question becomes clear—are these injuries a setback, or did they create valuable opportunities for others to step up?

OSU released a graphic on Sunday teasing something uniform related. The announcement is conveniently slated for 6:14pm on Monday the 11th. We’ve hinted that we suspect the gray “heritage” stripes are making a comeback. While still not confirmed, there is some sort of uniform change on the horizon. Could it be the addition of a sponsor patch? Sure, but I don’t think the athletic department would hype that up like this. So, that got me thinking about the different uniforms the Buckeyes have worn, starting with the OG “Pro Combat” in 2009 versus the team up north. I’ll be ranking fifteen different uniforms, with one borderline combination being included. That combination is deemed the 1968 throwback which combined the “cannonball” helmet with the black numbers on the sleeves and the gray sleeves. With that, I give you my alternate uniform rankings.

#15 All White “ Color Rush”

An all-white version of the standard road uniform worn against Michigan State in 2020.

#14 1916 Throwback aka The Cannonball Uni

The flat black helmet made it’s debut with this uniform worn against Nebraska in 2016, and would late be part of another unique combination. The red jersey with gray stripes and white number paid homage to the Chic Harley led squad, and the uniform was capped off by solid gray pants.

#13 1961 Throwback vs Wisconsin in 2011

The 2009 and 2010 alternate uniforms both cooked, but the 2011 rendition was interesting. The helmet was by far the star of this uniform. The helmet striped popped more than expected, and the black numbers on the side were a true ode to the 1961 team.

#12 1942 Throwback vs The Team Up North in 2010

The solid red jersey, combined with an almost candy apple red helmet made this uniform almost bland. But, the number font and the American flag were enough to overcome the helmet and jersey being very plain.

#11 All Red “Color Rush”

The 2021 season marked the first time the Buckeyes would wear scarlet pants since the 1950’s. The color rush red’s would also reappear during the 2024 CFP title run against Tennessee.

#10 1954 Throwback Pro Combat vs The Team Up North in 2009.

I think the fanbase nearly melted down when it was announced a different uniform would be worn for the 2009 version of “The Game.” However, the combination worked well. A white helmet with black numbers on the side, and a darker than normal gray pant made up this combination.

#9 2012 “Rivalry” vs The Team Up North

If these rankings were based on helmet alone, this would probably be top 5. The chrome helmet debuted with this often worn, and sometimes modified combo. This combination was worn in multiple games and did see occasional modifications, mostly unnoticeable to the casual observer.

#8 The “Blackout” Uni

Another combination that would be ranked higher, if based solely on the helmet! There have been two different combinations of the blackout kit, but the primary difference is tied to the material of the jersey itself.

#7 The Land of Wolves Away vs The Team Up North in 2017

This would undoubtedly be the number one uniform, if based on helmet alone. The camouflage helmet with the reflective buckeye leaves is my favorite alternate helmet ever.

#6 The Land of Wolves Home vs Penn State in 2017.

One of the best games I’ve ever witnessed, combined with JT Barrett putting the team on his shoulders make this uniform combo one most fans will never forget.

#5 1968 Throwback vs The Team Up North in 2016.

The “cannonball” helmet was worn with the home red throwback gray stripe jersey with black numbers on the shoulders. This was the “First Down Harbaugh” game, in which JT Barrett was able to eek out a first down in overtime that allowed Curtis Samuel to score the game winning td. Side note: he did get the first down, and it happened right in front of me and Jerry Springer who was 2 rows behind me.

#4 All Gray “Color Rush” vs MIchigan State in 2023 and Iowa in 2024.

This might be a surprise given how low I have the other color rush kits. However, the gray jersey with the red numbers is a slick combination. Jeremiah Smith making a one-handed touchdown might have also helped shoot this one to the top.

#3 2014 CFP White Heritage Stripes vs Alabama

The gray stripes, white jersey, and silver helmet were a perfect combination to shock the world and roll the tide in New Orleans. Another jersey that has been worn numerous times with modifications. However, I think the bulk of us associate it with that night in NOLA.

#2 2014 CFP Red Heritage Stripes vs Oregon

Much like the white version of this combination, it has been worn numerous times. However, the natty win over the Ducks is by far the most significant.

#1 The “Cocaine White” Rivalry Edition vs The Team Up North in 2013 and Penn State in 2014.

It’s only fitting that we started the countdown with an all-white uniform and ended it with one too! The all white version of the “rivalry” uniform just hit different. It’s criminal that these only got worn twice, honestly.

The Big Fish

Earlier this week, the ENTIRE offensive staff met up while on the trail. The reason for the meetup was Chattanooga, Tennessee all world 5* running back David Gabriel Georges. (The S is silent.) Georges is the number 1 ranked player in Tennessee, and the number 2 ranked running back in the country. The Buckeyes will be in a heated recruiting battle until signing day with the home state Vols. The recruiting intel says that the Buckeyes will not be outbid for the services of DGG.

The QB Situation

Brady Edmunds has been all Buckeye since committing on December 2, 2024. However, it seems the QB situation in this class might be worth monitoring. It originally seemed that OSU was looking taking 2 quarterbacks, as the flirted with Champ Monds who ended up committing to Notre Dame. However, it seems there might be more to it. UCLA seems to be pushing Edmunds pretty hard for a flip. Edmunds who is normally all Ohio State on his social media posted a photo with a UCLA coach on Thursday. In the wild world of recruiting I think the staff has a sixth sense for this type of situation, and this one seems no different as Coach Fessler has been a very busy man. In the last week alone, he has visited 4 quarterbacks.

Those 4 are:

Modern football has changed the way defenses think about both pass rush and coverage structure. Against today’s athletic quarterbacks, simply calling pressure is no longer enough. One defender losing leverage or one coverage player turning his eyes away from the quarterback can create explosive plays outside of structure.

That is why many defenses now pair two complementary ideas together:

• the cage rush

• non-traditional Tampa coverage structures

Together, they are designed to do one thing:

Keep the quarterback in structure and force him to play on schedule.

The Cage Rush: Controlled Pressure Over Chaos

The cage technique is a disciplined pass-rush philosophy built around pocket integrity rather than reckless upfield pressure.

Instead of four defenders independently chasing sacks, the rush works together to form a controlled “cage” around the quarterback. Edge defenders maintain outside leverage while interior rushers compress the middle, eliminating escape lanes and forcing the quarterback to stay inside the pocket.

Common coaching points include:

• “Rush as one.”

• “Don’t run past the quarterback.”

• “Collapse the pocket, don’t open it.”

• “Rush to the level of the QB.”

The objective is not necessarily immediate sacks (as frustrating as that may be for Buckeye Nation). The goal is coordinated pressure that prevents second-reaction plays and explosive scrambles.

As offenses increasingly feature quarterbacks capable of extending plays outside the pocket, the cage rush has become a major part of modern defensive football.

Why Coverage Matters in the Cage Philosophy

The rush and coverage must work together.

A disciplined rush means very little if defenders in coverage lose vision on the quarterback once the play breaks down. That is why many defenses pair cage-rush concepts with zone-oriented structures that allow defenders to keep their eyes forward and rally to quarterback movement.

The Evolution of Tampa 2

Traditional Tampa 2 was built around:

• two deep safeties

• squat corners

• a middle linebacker carrying the deep middle

• zone defenders keeping vision on the quarterback

The structure was designed to eliminate explosive vertical throws while forcing offenses to operate underneath.

But as spread offenses evolved, defenses had to adapt.

Mobile quarterbacks, RPO systems, and modern spacing concepts stressed traditional Tampa structures. Defenses responded by creating what many coaches now view as non-traditional Tampa concepts — modernized versions of Tampa principles that incorporate disguise, matching, and simulated pressure.

The philosophy stayed the same:

Keep vision on the quarterback, eliminate explosives, and force patient execution.

The structure simply evolved.

What Non-Traditional Tampa Looks Like

Modern defenses rarely line up in static Tampa 2 snap after snap. Instead, they disguise coverage and rotate into Tampa principles post-snap.

Defenses may:

• show quarters pre-snap

• rotate safeties late

• pattern-match routes underneath

• use simulated pressure

• drop edges while rushing linebackers

• alter who carries the middle of the field

Some teams even use safeties or dime defenders as the deep middle runner instead of the traditional Mike linebacker.

The result is a coverage structure that still carries Tampa DNA while fitting the realities of modern offenses.

Why the Combination Works

The cage rush and non-traditional Tampa complement each other naturally.

The cage rush:

• keeps the quarterback contained

• compresses escape lanes

• forces hesitation

The coverage:

• keeps defenders’ eyes on the quarterback

• rallies quickly to scrambles

• eliminates easy explosives once plays extend

Together, they force quarterbacks into uncomfortable situations:

• longer processing

• tighter throwing windows

• fewer clean escape opportunities

• sustained drives instead of explosive plays

Against elite dual-threat quarterbacks, that is often the priority.

Coach Patricia and the Modern Defensive Philosophy

Matt Patricia is not specifically known as a “cage rush” coach, but many of the principles associated with his defenses align closely with this philosophy.

During his time with the New England Patriots, Patricia’s defenses consistently emphasized:

• rush lane integrity

• leverage

• disguised coverage structures

• simulated pressure

• forcing quarterbacks to operate from the pocket

• strategic use of a spy defender against mobile quarterbacks (Arvell in the clip below)

Rather than relying purely on aggressive pressure, Patricia frequently deployed controlled four-man rushes paired with layered zone structures behind them. The objective was often to eliminate off-schedule plays while forcing quarterbacks to process post-snap movement and tight underneath spacing.

The use of a spy became another layer within that structure. The 2026 NFL draft and spring ball for the Buckeyes are in the rearview mirror, and we are looking ahead to both the 2026 college football season. I heard a comment from Joel Klatt today that made me want to make this the topic today. He referred to Columbus and the OSU program as “ the NFL draft factory.” We’ve discussed the recent successes in both Slate’s Opening Drive from Monday and Tuesday’s episode! I wanted to look at next year’s roster and see what the draft might hold for the next crop of guys headed to the league from inside the Woody.

The Potential Number 1 Pick?

1996 was the last time a wide receiver went number one overall, in the NFL Draft. I don’t expect that to change given the fact that Dante Moore and Arch Manning will be in the draft class, but Jeremiah Smith is going to give teams something to think about. Smith should go early, and that would give the Buckeyes a first round wide receiver for the sixth consecutive year.

The Polarizing Prospect

Julian Sayin was the most accurate passer in college football in 2025, and is still aiming to be a better overall signal caller in 2026. Sayin will get drafted, should he choose to declare after this season. Where he would get drafted is the intriguing part. Our in-house QB expert has his reservations on how Sayin’s game translates to the league. at 6’1 and up to this point being unwilling to use his legs I can see why. You can’t take him to the lab and add two or three inches in height, but you can work on using his legs. If Sayin adds that element to his game you could be looking at a first round pick, especially given the infatuation the NFL has with quarterbacks.

Do the Offensive Linemen Get Their Flowers?

The OSU offensive line has looked good for the most part since the playoff run at the end of the 2024 season. The unit looked rough the last two games of 2025, but a strong schedule will allow them the chance to show improvement against better competition. A successful 2026 campaign will go a long way toward boosting the draftee list for the 2027 draft. At this moment in time, my assumption is that Carson Hinzman, Luke Montgomery, Austin Siereveld, and Phillip Daniels will all be drafted. Where things get interesting for the offensive line is who wins the battle for the final starting position, as Gabe VanSickle, Josh Padilla, and Ian Moore are all draft eligible. Even with a good year, I don’t think VanSickle or Padilla would bolt early, due to interior offensive linemen not being a premier position. If Ian Moore were to win the position and have a great year, you could see him depart early, as tackle is the most important position on the line.

What About the Rest of Zone 6?

Brandon Inniss has been fairly scrutinized by Buckeye faithful during his tenure thus far. At the end of the day, Inniss is an Ohio State wide receiver. I don’t know where he will fall, but I don’t see a world where he doesn’t get drafted.

Transfer wide receivers Kyle Parker and Devin McCuin both have plenty of potential and are going to have chances to show off their skill sets in the OSU offense. I think Parker would have been drafted had he stayed at LSU. McCuin is the intriguing piece to the puzzle. We’ve heard all the buzz about what he brings, and if he makes the most of his opportunities he could hear his name called too.

I can also see David Adloph getting drafted in the later rounds.

Other Potential Draftees From the Offense

There are plenty of other potential draftees from the offense, some will be contingent upon playing time while some will depend on staying healthy.

The recent success that OSU has seen with putting tight ends in the league could easily continue, given that there are four draft eligible players in the room. Bennett Christian, Hunter Welcing, Mason Williams, and Max LeBlanc are all eligible. LeBlanc would have to put together a phenomenal season of some variety to declare, as he’s only a junior. I anticipate that if Welcing stays healthy he’s a sure-fire draft pick. If Williams can develop much like the last tight end to transfer in from Ohio University, Will Kacmarek, he too should hear his name called.

Transfer running back Ja’kobi Jackson will have to prove that he can stay healthy in order for him to be drafted, but the tools are there if healthy.

Is the Defensive Line Being Slept On?

A subject we will be looking at much more in-depth as we close in on the start of the season will be the defensive line. Spoiler alert: they’re being slept on. There are multiple guys from the defensive line that have the potential to be drafted. James Smith is probably the surefire draft pick, and his progression this season will go a long way in determining how early he hears his name called. Kenyatta Jackson Jr. could have declared this year, and would’ve been drafted. However, if he can play a full season like he did the back half of 2025 he should hear his name called earlier than it would have been this year.

Things get intriguing after that, because there is plenty of talent behind those two guys, but so much of it depends on progression and what the film shows. Beau Atkinson, John Walker, and Qua Russaw have all garnered praise during spring ball, and if those guys all continue to grow they could join the NFL brotherhood.

Will Smith Jr and Jason Moore will both have to take rather large leaps to be drafted I’d think. Eddrick Houston be draft-eligible too, but I think given that he’s still learning the interior he would be best to stay for his senior season.

Does the Linebacker Room Continue the Success?

It’s hard enough to replace one first round linebacker, let alone two. But, that’s what Coach Laurinaitis is tasked with doing. I don’t see OSU having two first rounders in 2027, and most likely not even two backers drafted. Payton Pierce will be eligible, but would need an Arvell Reese like come-up to declare. Wisconsin transfer Christian Alliegro is being deployed at both backer and edge, from the spring ball reports. I think he gets drafted to continue growing the Laurinaitis brand.

A Secondary Full of Unknowns

The secondary is full or new faces, but they are talented. Earl Little Jr. has shown flashes in his time at Florida State, and if he can come in and evolve into a true replacement for Caleb Downs the NFL will come calling for sure. Terry Moore has the range that the NFL loves, but coming off of ACL surgery successfully will be the storyline with him. Juniors Leroy Roker and Jaylen McClain will both be eligible, as well. Jermaine Mathews Jr. should hear his name called, but much like Earl Little so much of his draft position will hinge on growth. Mathews showed flashes last year, but had a rough game against Indiana in the Big Ten title game. If he can become more consistent he could easily be a day 2 pick. Cam Calhoun is going to be an interesting case study. If he can find his way on to the field he could be a late round pick.

The Success Will Continue

There are a lot of unknowns, with respect to draft positions, with the draft eligible Buckeyes on the 2026 roster. However, the potential is there to give the 15 player record, currently held by Georgia, a run. I don’t think this team will be nearly as top heavy as some draft classes, but it’s full of guys who can be solid contributors.
