The Opening Drive 12/20/25: The Buckeyes Primary Transfer Portal Target

New names enter the portal, including a Buckeye and a top 2027 target recently announced.

As we know, college football continues to become a 12 month a year conversation piece. Recruiting, the portal, the coaching carousel, and constant NIL oversight conversations are driving the car.

As we discussed on one of the episodes this week, the Transfer Portal doesn’t officially open until January 2nd, but that hasn’t stopped players and their representatives from making their intentions known. Some players enter the portal knowing where they want to go while others due all of their diligence.

One obvious potential Ohio State portal target also announced their intent to enter the portal on Thursday, as Ohio native and Penn State Edge Rusher Chaz Coleman announced his intent. Coleman, who hails from Warren, Ohio is the sole 5-star and the No. 1 ranked player in 247 Sports transfer portal rankings at this time.

Coleman is a twitchy edge, with burst and athleticism to go with his 6’4 and 245 pound frame. Ohio State is not only expected to be involved here, but is currently the favorite to land Colemans pledge.

Ohio State WR Bryson Rodgers will be entering the portal, with 2 seasons of eligibility left. This doesn’t come as a massive surprise, but make no mistake about it Rodgers is extremely talented and could have contributed next season. Rodgers flirted with the portal, and actually entered it last year, before returning to OSU. I feel a natural landing spot could possibly be USF to have a reunion with Brian Hartline.

Despite the CFP Playoffs continue today, the coaching staff is still doing plenty of recruiting for the class of 2027. One of, if not THE top linebacker target in the class Quinton Cypher, of Raleigh North Carolina, chose the Buckeyes yesterday. Cypher is ranked as the #11 linebacker, and the #8 player in North Carolina. We will have more on Cypher in the coming days.
