The Opening Drive 12/30: That is One Big 2027 "BOOM"
The Buckeyes get a surprise verbal commitment from a Georgia legacy.
Late Monday evening Ryan Day, Larry Johnson, and the rest of the Ohio State coaching staff pulled a 6’5 rabbit out of their hats. DJ Jacobs, the # 1 edge in the 247Sports composite rankings, shocked the college football recruiting world and chose the Buckeyes.
This came as a shock for 2 huge reasons. The first reason being that earlier in the day, Steve Wiltfong submitted his crystal ball prediction for Jacobs to give his verbal commitment to the Miami Hurricanes. For those who don’t follow recruiting closely or are new to following it, he is considered to be the most dialed in recruiting insiders in the country. The other reason is that Jacobs is a Georgia legacy. His father, David, played at Georgia from 1999-2002. Not to mention, his godfather is former UGA and Miami Head Coach Mark Richt.
Jacobs is an elite athlete, with insane potential. According to Ohio State insiders, he is viewed inside the Woody as the next Chase Young. Watch his tape and you will see immediately why that is. Jacobs shows great speed, and athleticism while showing things that will also need some coaching at the next level. He plays with a mean streak, and is as relentless as he is athletic. However, he lacks as Coach Slater would call it a “toolbox” of pass rush moves. He shows great bend and flexibility, while relying mostly on his athleticism to win reps in the film I’ve watched.

I will be very interested to see how this recruitment goes, given that we are a year away from signing day. Word on the streets is that Ohio State went “all in” to get the commitment, and who knows what that entails in the NIL era. A lot of folks are bringing up the reaction, or lack thereof by his parents, and that’s always something to monitor as we recently saw with Legend Bey in the ‘26 class.
Jacobs did say that he still plans to take official visits, but recruiting guru Chad Simmons wonders if that will truly happen. As things sit, this is a massive win and hopefully not the only time OSU stuffs Miami in a locker this week.
The addition of Jacobs puts the OSU 2027 class in the 3rd spot currently, behind Oklahoma and Texas A&M. Jacobs joins Huber Heights Wayne WR Jamier Brown as the 5-star prospects currently in the class. Brown raised the eyebrows of some Buckeye fans over the weekend by wearing a Miami shirt, but as we know these kids get gear at every camp, visit, and have no issue wearing it. We will continue to keep you updated on not only any developments with Brown or DJ Jacobs, but the rest of the 2027 recruits as well.
Buckeye Film Breakdown will return soon with some fresh content.
