The Opening Drive 5/22: Recruiting Update
A BOOM, more predictions, a 5-star shuts down his process, and Jett Harrison is still #1
BOOM!!
I made light of the smoke surrounding St. Thomas Aquinas edge rusher Wyatt Smith last week. Well, now we know why. On Sunday, Smith verbally committed to the good guys. The 78th ranked prospect in the 2027 class follows a couple of former STA Raider edge rushers in Nick and Joey Bosa. The other finalists were Indiana, Notre Dame, and his fathers alma matter Missouri. Smith is the son of former Tiger and Cincinnati Bengal defensive lineman Justin Smith.
Jamier Brown Shuts It Down
Jamier Brown was the second recruit that came to mind when Brian Hartline left of USF. ( Chris Henry Jr. being the first) Brown seemed to be saying the right things, but the pressure was coming from other schools. Brown had even gone on the record saying he would be taking OV’s to Miami and Oregon. That will no longer be the case. Brown has shut down his recruitment and is no longer entertaining pitches from other schools.
More 2027 Predictions and Smoke
Last week we saw the smoke around Wyatt Smith ramp up. This week multiple recruits were either crystall ball’d or RPM’d to the good guys from national writers.
ATH Deontay Malone from Massillon received multiple RPM’s. The number 12 player in Ohio projects to play corner at the next level.
DL Marcus Fakatou from Sierra Canyon in California has received both rpm’s and crystal balls. The second ranked defensive lineman is going to be tough to beat Notre Dame out for. The 6ft6 275 Fakatou would bolster the defensive line class and continue pushing it toward being epic.
LB Prince Goldsby out of Missouri may be the soonest of the players mentioned thus far to commit. He is the top ranked player in Missouri, and the seventh ranked linebacker. He has moved his official visit up to the May 29th weekend and could be on commit watch.
CB Monsanna Torbert Jr, a former Indiana commit has received a crystal ball this week too. The Cincinnati Princeton product is the 6th ranked player in the state. Notre Dame is heavily involved here too.

The Glenville Pipeline Growing?
LB Kaylon Bailey will be announcing his commitment on June 25th, and it’s presumed to be the Buckeyes. The explosive Tarblooder is a 3-star and sits at number 29 in Ohio. It’s a wild world when Glenville kids are announcing the summer of their senior year, given how many of the Tarblooder recruitments used to be announced on signing day.
Jett Harrison is Still Him.
On Monday, Rivals updated the Rivals300 and Jett Harrison remained atop that list. He ranks 7th overall in the 247Sports Composite Rankings, which we use here at the Buckeye Film Breakdown.
Buckeye Film Breakdown will return soon with some fresh content.
